A record number of passengers traveled through Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport in 2019. As the primary air transportation provider for Central Kentucky, Blue Grass Airport saw 1,465,049 total passengers — enplanements of 735,564 and deplanements of 729,485.
This is a 7.6 percent total passenger increase over 2018 and is the eighth consecutive year the airport has seen a record number of travelers.
The four airlines operating from Blue Grass Airport — Allegiant, American, Delta and United — continued to provide additional flights and larger aircraft in 2019, and travel remained strong. The year 2020 is off to an encouraging start with the recent announcement of United Airlines bringing its new CRJ-550, one-of-a-kind aircraft to Lexington.
Beginning Feb. 13 and serving the Lexington-Chicago route, this 50-seat regional jet will offer United passengers with first-class seating and premium amenities, including a self-serve refreshment center for United First passengers, more legroom per seat, the ability to stay connected while in flight with United Wi-Fi and storage for every passenger to carry on a roller board suitcase.
To facilitate its record growth, Blue Grass Airport has engaged in multiple improvement projects throughout the airport property, including the expansion of its long-term parking lot by 300 spaces, an expanded cell phone waiting area, special curbside pick-up for Lyft and Uber customers, and the addition of a covered walkway that will soon be added to the long-term parking area.
The new year is also bringing the renovation of two restaurants in the airport with fresh new concepts, updated interiors and menus offering a variety of foods including healthy options.
“This has been an exciting time at Blue Grass Airport as we continue to experience record growth,” said Eric Frankl, executive director of Blue Grass Airport. “We appreciate our customers’ commitment to fly with our airlines and to use our facilities. We have several projects underway to ensure we are continuing to offer excellent amenities and service in the years ahead.”
In addition to the airlines’ growth, the airport’s convenience is often cited as a chief reason why passengers choose to fly to and from Blue Grass Airport. Being so close to Lexington’s center of town and central Kentucky’s population, Blue Grass Airport is easily accessible for the traveling public.
With fewer lines, fewer crowds and fewer parking aggravations, Blue Grass Airport provides a quick travel experience. For most passengers, home is just a short drive away when arriving back from their flights.
