LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) - Hundreds of Kentucky Baptists are being equipped to make an impact in their churches and communities.
More than 700 people have attended the KBC’s Equip events during their first three stops in Prestonsburg, Somerset and Louisville last week.
The training event covers a broad base of church ministries ranging from music and worship to children’s ministry and evangelism. Eight of the events happen across the commonwealth throughout August.
Steve Rice, church consulting and revitalization team leader, said the event is aimed at helping churches jump start the school year which is the start of a new “church year” in many churches.
“We aim at August because people are coming off of summer, looking to get back into their routines at home, school and church,” Rice said.
The events are in the evening so they will be accessible to the widest number of church leaders possible, said Peggy Berry, women’s ministry and transition specialist. “There are many pastors and associational mission strategists who attend, but our largest attendance is from laypeople who serve in specific areas of the church.”
Sunday School and disciple ministries are a major focus at Equip. Darryl Wilson, Sunday School and discipleship consultant, believes the events are effective because the trainers are people who are practicing what they’re teaching.
“Every trainer at Equip is actively implementing the strategies they’re teaching in their own local church.”
He believes this gives strength to the training, helping it move from theoretical to something a local church can implement immediately.
Berry says the events are carefully mapped out across the state, giving the vast majority of Kentucky Baptists an opportunity to make the drive on a weeknight.
“We’ve had exceptional attendance this year. That could mean many things, but I’m certain it means Kentucky Baptists are eager to do their very best for the Kingdom of God while serving in their local church.”
There are five Equip events remaining on the calendar. Paducah on Monday, Bowling Green on Tuesday, Russell on Thursday and Owensboro on Monday, Aug. 26, and Versailles on Tuesday, Aug. 27. Registration begins at 6 p.m. local time. More information is available at kybaptist.org/equip.
