Kentucky state parks open only during daytime hours


LEXINGTON, Ky. (KT) — As part of an ongoing effort to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus in the state, the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet announced the Kentucky Horse Park and the Kentucky State Parks will be open for daytime hours only beginning Friday.

Overnight reservations for park lodges, cabins and campgrounds are suspended until further notice and upcoming reservations will be canceled. Those pending reservations will be refunded. The state parks will be open to the public from 7 a.m.-7 p.m., giving patrons access ti park trails and scenic sites for a 12-hour period.

In addition, golf courses within the stay parks will be open but food service has been suspended.

The Kentucky Horse Park will be open daily 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. but the visitor center will be closed to the general public until further notice. The walking trail will remain open.

According to the state tourism cabinet, “outdoor recreation plays an important role in fostering positive physical and mental health. Kentucky State Parks and the Kentucky Horse Park offer a variety of outdoor recreation activities that Kentuckians can continue to enjoy while engaging in social distancing.”

The cabinet urges guests at all of its state parks to following the following public health recommendations.

  • Do not use parks or trails if you are exhibiting symptoms

  • Be prepared for limited access to restrooms and water fountains

  • Maintain safe social distancing of the recommended six feet separation;

  • Do not congregate in groups at parking lots, trailheads or golf courses;

  • Avoid games that require close contact such as basketball and football

  • Move to a different location to avoid crowds
