LEXINGTON, Ky. (KT) — Northern Kentucky University didn’t take long to find its next head men’s basketball coach.
Less than two weeks after John Brennan left to take over at the University of Cincinnati, the Norse hired former Tates Creek High School product Darrin Horn. For the past four seasons, Horn as served as associate head coach at the University of Texas under Shaka Smart.
“Over the past four years, he’s been a valuable asset to our program and impacted our team and staff in many ways,” Smart told CBS Sports. “We will follow his success at Northern Kentucky with great excitement.”
Prior to his four-year stint with the Longhorns, Horn was head coach at Western Kentucky University and the University of South Carolina. While with the Hilltoppers, Horn compiled a 111-48 record and led Western to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2008. Horn also played for the Hilltoppers and scorer 1,115 points and collected 139 steals and played on three NCAA Tournament teams and another squad that reached the NIT.
Horn said it was a “thrill” to be named the head coach at Northern Kentucky. During the past three years, the Norse have reached the NCAA Tournament twice and compiled a 72-30 mark, including an impressive 40-14 record against Horizon League opponents.
"It was a job I've had my eye on for a while now,” Horn said Wednesday. “There is great momentum and energy surrounding both the basketball program and University. Norse Basketball is a winning program with players who know what it takes to win. I am impressed with the vision that both Ken [Bothof] and President Vaidya have for the program and University. My family and I can't wait to join the Norse family and Northern Kentucky community."
Bathof said Horn proved to be the “right fit” during the interviewing process.
"Throughout the hiring process, it became clear that Darrin was the right fit to lead the Norse men's basketball program,” he said. “Not only does he have ties to Kentucky from his prep and collegiate playing days, but he's also been a successful head coach at Western Kentucky."
Horn will be introduced by the school in a formal press conference on Thursday.
