LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) --  A joint federal and local effort in Louisville netted a large quantity of marijuana and fentanyl over a 13-day period.

Starting Jan. 9, CBP K-9 officers joined forces with local Louisville Metro Police officers for large drug seizures at the Express Consignment Operations hub in Louisville.

During the first week, Custom Border Protection K-9 officers and their  partners, Thibo and Plucky, helped discover 338 pounds of marijuana, 600 THC Vapes, 37 pounds of THC Wax, and 10 pounds of edible marijuana products.  This was after five days of work, with 37 different shipments sniffed out by both CBP dogs.  The drugs were found without any intelligence or notification, or what are referred to as “cold hits.”.

The following week, officers seized more than 350 pounds of marijuana, in addition to more than 500 fentanyl pills.

“Our canine teams are an invaluable asset to the CBP enforcement strategy,” said Anthony Speranza, supervisory CBP Canine Officer.  “These interdictions are a testament to the hard work, dedication and training these teams employ on a daily basis protecting America.”

“The Port of Louisville Canine Enforcement Officers and their Canine partners are among the most successful Narcotic Detector Dog teams in the nation,” said Brian Lick, Chief Supervisory CBP Officer. “They positively impact our communities by intercepting millions of dollars’ worth of narcotics a year preventing them from hitting our streets.”

The CBP says due to their robust capabilities, they frequently work with other federal, state and local agencies on many different missions.  The illegal substances were all turned over to the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department, Narcotics Unit.

CBP conducts operations at ports of entry throughout the United States, and regularly screens arriving international passengers and cargo for narcotics, weapons, and other restricted or prohibited products. They say their goal is striving to serve as the premier law enforcement agency enhancing the Nation’s safety, security, and prosperity through collaboration, innovation, and integration.
