Our legislators in Frankfort should be evaluated by their voting records, and we should reconsider our support for them if they claim to promote a better Kentucky, but vote against measures that would help us better our systems.
Does healthcare consider itself well represented in Frankfort? Rep. Susan Westrom of the 79th House District has claimed to be the voice of physicians and healthcare providers in Kentucky and she has gained the support from many because of her claims, but her voting record tells us differently.
According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, the medical liability climate in Kentucky is rated 47th most adverse in the 50 United States. Serious legislation needs to be passed to correct this issue, and some steps are being made to do just that.
In 2017, Senate Bill 4 was presented and passed by both House and Senate, and signed into law by the governor. It made provision to establish a medical review panel system for use in civil litigation and created measures that helps protect healthcare facilities against unnecessary civil actions.
This is a bill that will bring relief to healthcare workers across the state, and though Rep. Westrom has claimed to represent healthcare, she chose to vote against this measure. It is unknown whether she chose to vote based on party separation, but she did not vote based on her promise. Legislators, such as herself, have put us into the predicament that we are in today.
Do we want to continue to allow someone to represent the people of the 79th House District whose voting speaks louder than her words?
It is time the people of this district send someone to Frankfort that will vote to better Kentucky. They need someone who will be a majority voice in the legislator. As a healthcare worker at the University of Kentucky Hospital, I understand the need for legislative change to our antiquated healthcare system, and I will support measures to better that system. I will fight burdensome liability, I will fight for safer facilities, and I will fight to make sure everyone has the healthcare that they need.
